First, er, Second Round of the Year

Well, the weather and my schedule finally worked. I actually got out on Sunday; shot 88 from the Silver tees, but I was in a group I hadn't played with before, so I didn't take pictures.

So, here's the second round of the year with some pics. I love playing Blackhawk this time of year. The fescue is cut short, the greens are great but not lightning fast yet. The chances of finishing with the ball you started are so much better.

The day started overcast and windy, but by 15:00 it was sunny and still so I drove out to the course. No one was there; I snuck out as a single, that's the advantage to membership, drive up and you're playing.

Long shadows, that's the clubhouse.

Hole #1 is an uphill drive to a plateau, right is bad and left feeds onto the fairway. Your second shot is into a multi-tiered green, protected on the left by a deep bunker.

Approach to #1.

I bogied this hole, missed the green to the right and then chipped onto the wrong tier, still working on tempo.

Hole #2 is a longish par 4. A wide land area, but the second shot is up a hill. My seond shot was short leading to another bogie.

Lots of real estate to land it on #2.

Up the hill, the #2 green.

#3 is a 180ish par 3. Downhill but plays shorter than it looks. If it's windy, it's tough to hit the green, bunkers all 'round. The tee box is sheltered, but you shoot right out into the open.

Double bogie, don't want to talk about it.

#4 is a 500 yard or so par 5, and is a scoring opportunity. Managed a decent drive, but my 3 wood was a little short. Went pin hunting with my wedge over the bunker on the left side. First GIR of the round. Here's me lying 3. Birdie, woohoo!

#6 is a straight away par 4, but with a playable gulley on the left, hidden from the tee box. The fairway leading up to the green funnels most shots into the middle.

Drove into the gulley, but caught it well with the wind, ending up with an uphill lie on the far side. The real disadvantage to the gulley is that your second shot is blind. Left myself about 155, managed to put it on the front of the green with my 8 iron (trying to play more club than I need until my tempo settles). Second GIR of the round, but this is one tough green to putt on. I ended up parring the hole.

The next par 3 ate me up, but all in all a good round. Shot 86, hitting 76.9% of the fairways, averaging 1.8 putts per hole. I'm trying out an open putting stance that lets me see the ball and the hole at the same time. So far, so good.

Only making GIR 27.8%. So I have to work on approaching. I tend to pull the ball left if my tempo is out and I overswing and cast the club.

Stay tuned. I'll feature more holes in future posts. I have to leave you with some pictures of the signature #11. It's all down hill par 5 and another real scoring opportunity if you hit the fairway. You might say, but it's huge, how can you miss the fairway. Trust me, I've found many ways. Oh, by the way, GIR, but 2 putts for par. I was only three yards short of an eagle putt. Well, there is always tomorrow.

#11's peninsula green.
